    Thai pavilion - Thailändska paviljongen

Utanede in Jämtland has a population of people. However, Utanede also has the largest Thai Pavilion in the world, outside Thailand of course. Hundreds of thousands of people have already visited the Pavilion. The story begins in Oscar II, King of Sweden and Norway, invited King Chulalongkorn of Siam to an art and industry exhibition in Sweden. Oscar II also advised his guest to use the opportunity to take a look at the light summer nights, the beautiful views and the modern saw mills of Norrland. It was an important day when the King of Siam and his exotic retinue stepped off the tåg at Bispgården to continue his journey by horse and carriage to the steamer jetty at Utanede, from where the visitors returned to the coast by steamer along the river Indalsälven. Even westerners who know that King Chulalongkorn abolished polygamy, slavery and the death penalty find it difficulty to truly appreciate his importance to the people of Thailand today. The closest comparison would probably be a mixture of Mother Teresa and Jesus Christ. Statues, amulets and portraits of the King are sold in their hundreds

    Chulalongkorns resa

    [redigera | redigera wikitext]

One can wonder, why is there a beautiful pavilion dedicated to Rama V &#; King Chulalongkorn in the small town of Ragunda in Jämtland in northern Sweden? This pavilion is completely Thai-style architecture with a meter golden gilded spire on top. There is a bronze statue of the Great Thai King inside, and it was built with Swedish local construction materials. The location was chosen by Thai people and blessed by Thai monks. Also, not to forget, it was challenging to make the idea come true since the foundation had to be dug very deep in an area covered with unpredictable &#;blue clay&#;. The answer to why it was built has to do with Chulalongkorn visiting Sweden. So, the Thai King came to Sweden in , invited by the Swedish King Oscar II to an exposition of art and industry. At the time, Sweden and Norway were united as one kingdom.
