This paper highlights and discusses the arguments in favor of, or against Mother Tongue Instruction (MTI) in Swedish parliamentary debate between and New to this decade is the entrance of yet another nationalist and populist party with the abolishment of MTI on its political agenda. Building on a critical discourse analytical frame and argumentation analysis, we discuss this party’s rhetoric on MTI – based in an Othering discourse and the construction of MTI as a path to alienation – and the parliamentary counter-voices. The latter mainly concern the role of MTI for development of Swedish and learning in other school subjects, implying that MTI in its own right is subordinated.     @misc{, abstract = {{This thesis aims to take a closer look into the EU-referendum in Sweden. More precisely to analyse the arguments used by the political campaigns run bygd the organisations “Folkrörelsen nej till Europa” (The peoples movement against Europe) and “Ja mot Europa” (Yes to Europe) in the run-up to the referendum. The analysis focuses on the debate between the two sides which aired on the 11th of November , two days before the election. The aim of the analysis is to relate the arguments to existing theories concerning europeisk integration. To be able to categorize the arguments depending on which theory they seem to follow. Goal two is to compare the content of the arguments to the reality we have in Sweden today. To test the arguments ability to “predict” the future. The result of the study is that “Ja mot Europa” are closely connected to the theory of intergovernmentalism and that “Folkrörelsen nej mot Europa” are closely connected to neofunctionalism.
